Phoenix Rising

by Dora Wright

Phoenix

Dragon races the night sky
Climbing ever higher
Towards the moon he rises
Breathing smoke and fire
The stars in all their finery
Coruscate while he’s nigh
Spurring dragon on his way
As the planets sigh.

Soaring past the unicorns
With horns of shining white
Surging, passing Pegasus
Across the moonlit night
Time was growing ever short
He had to heed the call
As the moon turned to darkness
Heralding man’s downfall.

He knew that Phoenix waited
Arising from the fire
Surrounded by leaping flames
Upon his funeral pyre
The world would now be reborn
A Goddess at the helm
Celestial creator
Rejoicing in her realm.
