Avalon in Silk

by Jan Billings

Purple TorPainting has always been a passion for me. Colour and pattern are a constant in my work. The process of creating visual dynamics by playing one colour off against another has always intrigued me.  I am constantly fascinated by the juxtaposition of colours from my first psychedelic designs in the 60s to the more muted tones I use at the moment.

At last, I feel with using silk and dyes, that I have found my ideal medium, where the transformative properies of colour, light and illumination are an integral part of my new work. Now my colours  sing from the shimmering silk fabrics.

Sometimes the silks achieve a life of their own as there is always an element of chance when painting with dyes, depending on the outside temperature and the porosity of the silk fibres. Working free-hand, I love the sinuous, illustrative quality of line produced by the liquid gutta which is used as an outliner to contain the coloured dyes.  I also like to let the dyes find their own level on the silk and the different colours always seem to have specific characteristics when interacting with each other. Dyes on silk produce a luminous quality that is unique in its transparency and purity. Each piece is an original, with its own spirit.

I am a trained Aura Soma Colour Therapist. Aura Soma is a form of healing through the use of colour. I have learned about all the spiritual, emotional, physical and mental properties of every single colour and every colour combination and their effect on the human psyche and attempt now to use this knowledge within my painting.

My images are drawn from the landscape around Glastonbury and also coastal themes based on my childhood favourite places in Gower. These special landscapes have been a major influence on my work. I am also working with images of Angels. I am constantly inspired by natural forms and the everchanging skies.
